Moon Sighting Avoiding Timings on Ganesh Chaturthi 2018

Ganesh Chaturthi, the Hindu festival which celebrates the birthday of Lord Ganesha is here. In 2018, Ganesha Chaturthi will be celebrated on Thursday, 13th September 2018.

On this day, at night one needs to be careful as according to Hindu Mythology, one should avoid looking at the moon as doing so Mithya Dosham or Mithya Kalank (कलंक) which means false accusation of stealing something.

Don’t take this lightly. According to Hindu Mythology, Lord Krishna was falsely accused of stealing precious jewel named Syamantaka and this was because Lord Krishna had sighted moon on the day of Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi and hence he has been cursed with Mithya Dosham. Later on the advice of sage Narada Lord Krishna observed Ganesha Chaturthi fasting to get rid of Mithya Dosha.

Story of Ganesha’s Broken Tusk and Cursing of Moon :

Moon Sighting Avoiding Timings on Ganesh Chaturthi

According to Hindu mythology, once Lord Kubera had invited Lord Ganesha for dinner. After a mighty feast, in which Lord Ganesha had eaten too many of his favourite modakas, he was returning home late in night riding on his vahana – the mouse. It was a full moon night and the moon was in all his splendour – clean, round and unblemished.

On their way, suddenly a snake crossed their path and frightened by it the mouse made a dash for safety and in the process Ganesha fell on the ground with a loud noise. His stomach broke open, and all the modakas he had eaten rolled on to the ground. Ganesha now started stuffing all the modakas back into his stomach and grabbed the snake and tied it round his stomach to keep the modakas in it. Ganesha soon heard a silvery laugh and noticed moon laughing at him. He got angry at moon’s behavious and broke his right tusks and flung it at the moon, making a direct hit, and shouted that the moon would never be whole again. Which is why the moon has a crater which we can see right from the Earth.

Prior to this incident, moon used to shine every night in full force 365 days of the year but after this incident, Lord Ganesha created the cycles of waxing and waning that we now see every fortnight.

Ganesha also cursed the moon saying that any man who looked at the moon on Ganesha Chaturthi, the birthday of Ganesha, would be cursed with Mithya Dosha and would be tainted and dishonoured in the society.
