Ganesha Chaturthi 2018

Ganesha Chaturthi (गणेश चतुर्थी) is the Hindu festival observed on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period) of the Hindu calendar month of Bhaadrapada to celebrate the birthday (rebirth) of Lord Ganesha, the son of Shiva and Parvati.

According to legends, it was on this day that Lord Shiva fixed the head of the baby elephant in place of Ganesha’s head and gave him rebirth. On this day, Lord Shiva also gave him the name of Ganesha (meaning Lord of all Gana’s). His original name was Vinayaka.

Ganesha is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune and traditionally invoked at the beginning of any new venture or at the start of travel.

Ganesha Chaturthi also known as Ganeshotsav is a ten day festival which ends on Anant Chaturdashi (fourteenth day of the waxing moon period).
